Our Story

From Our Family to Your Table

For three generations, the Charles family has been caring for bees, working with Tasmania’s unique landscapes and producing distinctive honey from the northwest of the island.

About story

The Family Behind the Honey

A Family Tradition Built Around Honey

Blue Hills Honey began with Reuben and Beryl Charles in 1955, when they established a commercial beekeeping business in northwest Tasmania.

What began as a family enterprise has grown over three generations, while the principles behind it have remained the same:

  • Care for the bees.
  • Respect the environment.
  • Protect the quality of the honey.

Today, the Charles family continues to operate Blue Hills Honey as a family-owned business, producing and packing honey from their facility at Mawbanna on the edge of the Tarkine region.

Our Home

From the Heart of the Tarkine

Our honey begins in a remarkable part of Tasmania.

The northwest of Tasmania is home to ancient forests, wild landscapes and an extraordinary diversity of flowering plants. Among them is the rare Leatherwood tree, whose blossoms give our signature Leatherwood Honey its distinctive character.

Our bees work across these natural landscapes, collecting nectar from the flowers around them and transforming it into honey with flavours that reflect their surroundings.

This is more than where we work.
It’s part of what makes our honey unique.

Our Beekeepers

Caring for Bees,
One Hive at a Time

Behind every jar is a team of people who understand bees, seasons and the Tasmanian landscape.

Our beekeepers carefully manage our hives throughout the year, preparing colonies for the flowering season, selecting suitable locations and monitoring hive health.

During the warmer months, our bees get to work across Tasmania’s forests, meadows and flowering landscapes.

Our role is simple:

Give the bees a healthy environment to thrive in, and carefully harvest the surplus honey they produce.

From Hive to Jar

Nature Does the Hard Work

We believe great honey doesn’t need to be over-processed.

Once the honey is harvested, we use a careful process designed to minimise handling while maintaining its natural characteristics.

Our honey is extracted, filtered and settled before being prepared for retail or bulk markets.

Throughout processing, Blue Hills Honey maintains the honey below 45°C, helping preserve its delicate flavours and aromas.
